Cycling Kampala to Advocate for Clean Air, Sustainability, and Cancer Prevention

March 17, 2026

On February 13, 2026, members of Pebuu Uganda rode on electric bicycles through Kampala streets, joining the campaign Cycling for Clean Air and advocating for alternative transportation means in the cities to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution.

Supported by eBee Mobility, an electric bicycle company promoting clean mobility solutions across Africa, the Pebuu team took part in their advocacy campaign. The campaign reinforced shared commitment among businesses to reduce carbon footprint, while highlighting its harmful effects on the environment and human health, such as air pollution. According to the WHO, air pollution is one of the leading environmental health risks globally, contributing to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer. Urban centres like Kampala are particularly affected due to high vehicle density and dust pollution.

Addressing the staff before the ride, Owiny Hakim, ESG Advocacy and Activation Manager at eBee Mobility and the current Bicycle Mayor of Kampala, encouraged the Pebuu team to see their involvement as part of a broader movement: “It may be you alone on this bicycle, but you are inspiring many people. By sharing this in your network, you are bringing climate action into existence beyond speeches and presentations.”

As the ride coincided with Cancer Awareness Month, the Pebuu team took the opportunity to express their solidarity with everyone affected by cancer and advocate for its prevention by wearing pink ribbons throughout the ride. Together, this gesture served as a reminder that environmental health and human health are connected, and business operations are both responsible for and also dependent on the wellbeing of people and the planet to expand their services.

This eCycling activity was held within Pebuu’s broader sustainability strategy, focusing on greening its business operations and reducing negative environmental impact. As a part of its strategy, in 2025, Pebuu launched a campaign Serving Our Customers, Saving the Planet, inviting its partners and stakeholders to a joint green action. At the core of Pebuu’s campaign is transitioning to greener and cleaner energy in its last-mile logistics operations to reduce its carbon footprint. “We are committed to a greener planet by introducing electric mobility into our fleet, reducing our CO2 emissions, and taking practical steps toward a cleaner and more sustainable future”, shared Pebuu Africa Founder and CEO John Paul Ssemyalo.

This initiative is also a part of the company’s ongoing effort to strengthen employee health and wellbeing and gradually build a sustainability culture at the workplace. Working in a fast-paced environment and carrying responsibility in a strictly regulated sector is often strenuous and demanding. Through cycling and similar activities, the organisation encourages its employees to spend time outdoors and exercise to unwind stress collected at the office throughout the week, both for their physical and mental wellbeing.
